While chaos was the prevailing mood of 2022, the Potatoz NFT collection defied the odds by quietly gathering momentum in the background. Now however, Potatoz has witnessed a surge in sales prior to the arrival of ‘The Captainz,’ the second NFT drop in 9Gag’s Memeland project.
How Potatoz Rose to the Top
Potatoz is notable for being a utility-enabled project that shows pixelated potatoes in a number of themes and settings. Holding an NFT from the collection provided an opportunity to mint a Captainz NFT, which explains the sudden surge in sales.
Taking place on January 4, the Captainz mint represented an exciting new chapter in the Memeland project. Essentially, allowing Memelist, Potatoz, or Waitlist members to purchase Captainz NFTs at a price of 1.069 ETH for a limited time of 48 hours. The assets offer specific perks, including access to exclusive events, which likely contributed to their high demand, especially given the recent success of Potatoz.
The starchy NFT project saw a 136% increase in trading volume on several marketplaces including OpenSea and Rarible. Impressively, it was able to overtake the Bored Ape Club by over 25% and record an impressive new floor price of 2.38 ETH ($2,900).
While we are still early in the year, this could be a good sign for both Potatoz and the industry as a whole. For Potatoz, it could mean a recovery from its initially lukewarm market reception and a chance to find itself a new audience. For the industry, it could represent a thawing of the icy plains of crypto winter.
