Over in the old-fashioned realm of Web2, social media has recently witnessed a great deal of controversy by seeing a number of legacy platforms flounder as they attempt to adapt to the new world. Now however, Web3 will look to wrest the baton from the old guard, as Lens Protocol offers a better alternative.
Lens Protocol represents something new, not a social media platform in its own right, but a social graph. In a nutshell, it offers an entire on-chain identity, all centered around a profile NFT. Those NFTs then store all the important information regarding followers and interactions, which in turn will allow users of the platform to take their entire following to any plugin operating within its framework. That can be anything from a messaging service, video sharing platform, Twitter clone, or something new that hasn’t been thought of yet.
In addition, as all core data is linked to a single NFT, users for the first time are in control of their information, meaning that they can choose what happens to it, and monetize their data on their own terms. They can also complete control over their profile and even set follower parameters in order to fend off the scourge of bots.
So, as questions remain around the big players in the old generation of social media, a paradigm shift has begun within Web3.
